Wasps and their behaviour

Wasps are part of the ecosystem, but when they build nests near human habitation they can be a pest and even a danger. In Dublin and surrounding areas, dealing with wasp infestations requires a lot more than just awareness, but professional intervention to be safe. Wasp nest removal is key to preventing wasp stings and severe reactions.

The life cycle of a wasp colony

The wasp’s year starts in the spring when the queen emerges from hibernation. The queen begins to build a new wasp nest using wood fibres, which she chews and mixes with saliva to make a paste. This paste forms the structure of the nest, often found in attics, sheds or wall cavities. Early in the season, the queen is the only one responsible for the nest’s construction and the care of the first brood. Once these wasp larvae have matured into worker wasps, they take over the mission of expanding the nest and foraging for food.

At this stage, wasp activity is at its peak, especially in late spring and summer. Just to let you know, wasps flying around your home can signify an active nest. The queen will continue to lay eggs until the end of summer, after which new queens and males are produced. These new queens will mate and hibernate, and the rest of the colony including the old queen will die off as the winter approaches.

So always keep in mind that wasps flying around your home can signify an active nest.

Wasp risks

Knowing wasps and their behaviour is key to avoiding wasp stings and wasp infestations. The common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the German wasp (Vespula germanica) are found in Dublin. These wasps have a yellow and black colouring, slim wings and a shiny body. They can be aggressive when they feel threatened near their nest.

Wasp stings are not only painful but can also cause severe reactions in some people. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from generalised swelling to in extreme cases anaphylactic shock. If stung, monitor the affected area and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. Immediate medical attention is required in cases of extreme anaphylactic shock which can be life-threatening.

So, if you or someone else has a severe allergic reaction to a wasp sting, call an ambulance straight away. Applying ice to the affected area will help reduce swelling, but medical attention may be required to prevent life-threatening complications.

Where wasps nest

Wasps like to nest in sheltered areas that are out of the elements. Common places include roof spaces, garden sheds, fascia boards, chimney and cavity walls. If you hear buzzing or see wasps going in and out of a specific area of your home, it’s likely that a nest is nearby.

Preventing wasp infestations

To prevent wasps from returning and building new nests, it’s essential to seal any entry points around your home. Sealing cracks in walls, repairing damaged fascia boards and covering air vents will stop wasps from getting in. Regular inspections by pest control professionals will also help identify early signs of a wasp infestation before it becomes a big problem.

Emergency response and aftercare

In cases where a wasp nest is an immediate threat, Pest Control Dublin offers a same-day service. Our wasp nest removal service helps solve the problem quickly and effectively. After the nest is removed, it’s important to monitor the area to make sure no wasps have survived to rebuild the nest. Regular inspections will help prevent future infestations.

I am absolutely delighted with the service I received from Pest Control and would highly recommend them.

I initially phoned Elaine to explain that I had wasps getting in between the wall and a wooden panel above my sitting room window. Elaine explained the dangers of trying to treat the problem myself and advised that it was much safer to leave it to the professionals. She also explained that the wasps had probably started building their nest around February and that, due to the very hot weather, I was now noticing a significant increase in activity.

I booked an appointment and Tony arrived exactly as arranged. He explained clearly what he was going to do and advised me to remain indoors for the following hour, as the wasps would become very active once the treatment was applied.

Tony put on all the necessary safety equipment and carried out the treatment. I honestly could not believe the number of wasps that were actually there! There is no way I would have been able to deal with them myself, regardless of how much wasp killer powder I used.

Tony was extremely professional and reassuring throughout the whole process. He even said he would call back the following day to check that the job had been successful, which I thought was excellent customer service.

A big thank you to Elaine and Tony for their professionalism, expertise, efficiency and excellent service. The problem was dealt with quickly and properly, and I now have peace of mind knowing it has been taken care of by professionals.

I would highly recommend Pest Control to anyone who has a wasp problem. Excellent service from start to finish! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

FAQ About Wasp Infestation

To get rid of wasps in Dublin, start by removing anything that attracts them, like open bins or sugary foods. You can set up wasp traps around your garden or patio to catch them. If you’ve found a nest, it’s best to call a pest control service to deal with it safely. If the wasps are just causing a nuisance, peppermint oil or citronella candles can help keep them away.

You can, but it’s not recommended unless the nest is small and easily accessible. Wasps can be aggressive, especially when their nest is disturbed, and a swarm is not something you want to deal with. Call in the experts—it’s safer and quicker.

Most local councils in Ireland don’t offer a service to remove wasp nests, especially if they’re on private property. You’re usually on your own to sort it out. It’s best to contact a pest control company for advice or removal; they have the gear and know-how to handle it safely.

The most common wasp you’ll see buzzing around in Ireland is the Common Wasp, also known as Vespula vulgaris. You might also spot the German Wasp, which looks quite similar. They’re the ones that tend to crash picnics and cause havoc when they set up nests in your shed or attic.

Wasps aren’t big fans of certain smells, especially peppermint, eucalyptus, and citronella. You can use these as natural repellents—try spraying peppermint oil mixed with water around doors, windows, and outdoor seating areas. Citronella candles can also help keep them at bay when you’re outdoors enjoying the sunshine.
